Sahtyre - "NonViolent" Feat. Chuuwee

Shout out to my guy Sahtyre on his new release with Chuuwee produced by the other homie, Chase Moore.

I keep my phone on DND. I got like 25 people saved in my "favorites" and that's the only phone calls or text messages I even get a notification from. I'm not concerned with constantly being connected to the world wide web as much as I'm trying to be connected with the moment I'm living in.

I think art is about being yourself and doing whatever it is you do without thinking too much about it.

That's why I hit Chuuwee for this record. He's been one of my favorite people & rappers since we first met in Sacramento hella years ago through Chase Moore. It's crazy how everything comes full circle. - Sahtyre

Dumbfoundead Changes Name & Drops New EP

K-Town, L.A. emcee Dummie (fka Dumbfoundead) just dropped his 10th solo project, Café Bleu. "The milestone release is a nod to his evolution as an artist as he is free to venture out with progressive unconventional sounds that pay tribute to the kind of tolerant community we’re all looking for…the one where we are accepted as we are."

“Café Bleu is an imaginary neighborhood spot where everyone is free to come hangout… nobody needs to know your name or your history and you can figure out your next moves in life without judgement. With this being my 10th solo project, I feel like I’m in a place where I am free to make choices without having to worry about the reactions of those choices. It’s a very liberating feeling. As an artist, I am now more open to exploring television, film, screenwriting and more.”

Dummie is also making his big screen debut in the Eminem produced satirical film Bodied. Starring as a seasoned battle rapper named Prospek, Dummie coaches the outsider about the in-your-face rapid fire street battles. The film has already won the Toronto International Film Festival People’s Choice Award as well as Fantastic Fest’s 2017 Audience Awards. Bodied has been met with critical acclaim earning a 92% positive approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes and rave reviews from RobertEbert.com, LA Times, Slash Film, The Verge, Coming Soon, Joblo and The Globe and Mail.

I'm definitely going to check it out. As you should check the new EP.

Hip-Hop In: Turkey (Onur Yeğin)

In this issue of my international series, "Hip-Hop In" we head over to Istanbul to check out Turkish producer Onur Yeğin. I was actually talking with a Turkish friend this morning about visiting and some of their beautiful architecture. Onur is known for his productions for underground Hip-Hop artists Çağrı Sinci, Harun Adil, Onur Uğur and Dipnot. Sampled from Turkish cult songs, he also released two instrumental projects titled "Instrumental Vol. 1" and "Je Suis Perdu".

Onur Yeğin's new instrumental EP "Örs" (meaning: anvil) is now available via Deadly Habits Music owned by Turkish producer Farazi.

Far East Movement Sign Multi-Million Dollar Chinese Partnership

I've been down with F.E.M. since the early 2000s back in my AznRaps.com days. I have a track called Blue Collar Blues when they were more backpacky (similar to Black Eyed Peas' evolution). I love seeing their growth and what it does for the urban And Asian communities.

They recently signed a multi-million dollar deal as the first American act with Chinese company, NetEase. "Not only is NetEase one of the largest internet companies in the world, this new venture breaks ground as the very first deal they’ve signed with an American recording artist to develop and release brand new musical content."

“We spent the last few years in Asia learning about the music scene out there, and we felt it was important to add that identity into Far East Movement. This project is specifically inspired by our journey in China. It’s a humbling story of discovering new things about yourself and being open and receptive to wherever life takes you.” - Prohgress, Far East Movement

Fellow Foreign Adoptee, Kingsley makes a new fan in "Lock Me"

This cat's dope. Being a foreign adoptee who found roots in hiphop and wants to rebuild his own community, I can dig this dude's story.

Born in West Africa, adopted at 11 months and raised in Newark, NJ, Kingsley’s sound makes connections to his roots by incorporating R&B, Pop, Reggae, and Afro beat. Kingsley’s goal, along with his home team F.E.D.D.I, (Fetch Every Damn Dollar Insight), is to show the world the power of self love and to help rebuild the black communities by encouraging others to pursue their dreams by reaching passed their limits and always believing that anything and everything is possible.

Layla Khepri gets personal on "The KickBack Reloaded"

This gets real personal and heavy. I've been working with Layla Khepri for a couple years and I have no doubts she'll be a household name. But in this cyclical life no rise is complete without falls. She went to social media and was open about the passing of her mother and how it obviously affected her personally and career-wise.

I was surprised Diamond B Frazier, host of The Kickback Reloaded was that blunt in some of her questioning but I know Layla needed to share her experiences not only as a release but to help others going through such a close, personal loss. Layls's extremely strong and her bounce back is tremendous. The interview is very deep and personal as she not only discusses her forthcoming album but topics of drug use and timing in the industry!

New Music from Sincerely Yours - "96 [Nightmares]"

Ahh, nice to hear some lyricism now. Chicagoland emcee, Sincerely Yours teams up with producer RD after a 3-year hiatus to create a new project as well as a project with Neak (wonder if Neak is Neak?)

On this song, I talk about what being an artist is all about; shaking your fears to be courageous, bold, and fearless in the eyes of chasing your dreams. RD provides an amazing nostalgic hip-hop backdrop that makes it easy to write the truth of my life!

Produced by RD. Mixed and Mastered by A.Quality

Neak knows his "Legacy"

Chicago MC/Producer, Neak dropped his new self-produced single, "Legacy" which touches on "how I want to be remember; through hard work while utilizing my God-given talents to be a vessel to serve others striving for greatness."

I was intrigued by reading up on him because [remember Chicago] his bio starts out with 'If your father, Robert Kelly…', MY first thought was, oh, Damn R. Kelly has a kid who raps? lol but the sentence continues with '...of the R&B/Gospel/Soul group "The Kelly Brothers...' which is still dope. He has some Bars. So all my fans of true lyricism, which if you're here I'm sure you are, will like.

"I'm currently gearing up to release my new self-produced album, 'KWESBAAR' and new crew album, NRFS, with Chicago MCs/Producers Rashid Hadee and F.A.B.L.E., MC/songwriter Sincerely Yours, and myself. Both albums are scheduled to be released very soon._ - Neak

Old Age

Been a big fan of Masego for a minute. He makes some super dope music and it's heavily jazz/instrumentally focused; as a [former] saxophone player myself I love it. He also touches on a favorite topic of mine, mature women.

Even back to high school/college I always went for older girls. Few girls a year or 2 younger but I was the 20 year old going out with 24 year old co-workers. I always appreciated an older, more mature woman and Masego gets it lol

Eminem - "Lucky You" ft Joyner Lucas

Is this 'beef' [publicly] over yet? Can I say I'm a fan of Eminem's new album, Kamikazee without appearing like I've taken a side?? Cool. I had no dog in that fight so I'll focus on the music. THIS track with Joyner Lucas SLAPS. The beat is nasty, both dudes go OFF. I'll let it speak for itself.

'y'all gotta move'.

Vevo Original: Scott Storch "Still Storch" documentary

Scott Storch is one of my favorite producers. The piano licks this dude has are incredible. He has a minute at the beginning of this documentary that I've had on repeat since it was released. He also has such a crazy story that it needed to be shared.

Vevo has exclusively released, 'Still Storch,' an original film about legendary music producer Scott Storch. From his early beginnings as a member of The Roots band to producing worldwide hits for Beyoncé, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Chris Brown and many others. This no-holes barred mini-doc delves into Scott’s world, to tell his harrowing story of addiction and fame in his own words. Both of which led him to burn through a $100 million+ fortune, and hit ‘rock-bottom’, however his unrelenting genius-like talent and hunger to prove his critics wrong has only fueled his passion for creating.

“People have their bottoms – I shot through the bottom and I went like a hundred thousand leaps beyond the sea bottom… I don’t know many people who could survive emotionally, mentally through what I went through.” - Scott Storch

Now, Scott is back making headlines; having never left the studio, he is ready for a come-back, working with some of the most exciting names in music.

The documentary was commissioned by Vevo, directed by Rollo Jackson, from SomeSuch Productions, with executive producers Joseph Patel and Justin Prager.

‘The hunger is taking back my throne.”
- Scott Storch.

Hip-Hop In: Africa (Sean Dampte)

I'm a connoisseur of foreign music and love the afrobeat sound so I had to feature African artist, Sean Dampte. His new video "2Nite" has been getting a lot of views and had to share!

"Afrobeat rising star, Sean Dampte drops the video to his successful commercially acclaimed single, ‘2nite’. Fans anticipated the visuals to the single ‘2Nite’ weeks ago and after several push backs, Sean Dampte has finally given us something to be excited about. Shot in different locations around Canvey Island, United Kingdom, and directed by award-winning director, Ovie Etsetayse, the video show-cases Sean Dampte’s super star power. The video is undoubtedly one of the best to date from the artist and in the afrobeat scene."

About Sean Dampte
Sean Dampte (F.K.A. Dampte) has already taken Africa by storm with his perfect concoction of Afrobeat and World Music. Known in his home country of Nigeria for music that guarantees to get everyone up and on the dance floor, Sean Dampte is bringing his untameable groove to the UK. Citing influences such as Warren G, Wale and LL Cool J, Sean Dampte successfully blends all he has learned from his muses with his African heritage. Vevo Originals - Pusha T reveals how The Purple Tape shaped DAYTONA

Today marks the 23rd Anniversary of Raekwon’s classic album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx (commonly referred to as The Purple Tape). As a respectful nod to Raekwon, Pusha T delves into how The Purple Tape shaped DAYTONA, his own new album and expands on his own tribute lyrics “This Is My Purple Tape” from track “The Games We Play."

Filmed at the Stapleton Houses on Staten Island has Pusha T explains, “This is the best rendition [of The Purple Tape] I could’ve tried. The inspiration and feeling was something we were trying to harness.”

Father & Son duo, Lone Wolf & Kub - "Bolo Yeung" MV

"Bolo Yeung" is the debut single/video from father/son MC combo Lone Wolf & Kub. Like its name sake, the track is an aggressive force that immediately presents itself as the baddest in the room, beckoning to the days of braggadocio mic skills where all that mattered was who had the hardest lines. Produced by Lavish Beatz, the beat matches the mood perfectly with its thundering bass line and frenzied piano hits. This is an auditory samurai showdown at its finest.

A father/son duo hailing from Washington State, Lone Wolf & Kub is the perfect combination of golden era lyricism spliced with cutting edge soundscapes and cadences. Made up of Shao Sosa and his son Nobi, the two are quickly cutting a path to the front of the burgeoning Northwest Hip Hop scene. Sosa is an underground industry vet with over 25 years cutting his teeth alongside names as different as Mac Dre and Ras Kass while Nobi is a vicious micsmith just hitting his stride. Their forthcoming self-titled debut album is a testament to the years they have spent together honing their sound.

interview with Japanese soul singer, Nao Yoshioka

A few weeks ago I heard the new single by a Japanese soul singer, named Nao Yosihoka. I was a fan of a singer when I was a singer named Toshi when I was in high school. Nao only sings in English, despite being raised in Osaka. She has a beautiful voice and we had a great conversation about everything from how she's was raised being the only singer in a creative household to her first major US festival and the difference between US and Japanese fans.

I might have even convinced her to serenade me with a soul classic, too.

Mahalia - "I Wish I Missed My Ex" MV

I've been a fan of Mahalia since I stumbled upon her "Colors TV" performance. She has such a beautiful voice (and eyes!) and I've been on an English kick for a couple years so digging' the accent, too. But her knew video is an homage to The Pharcyde and shot in Highland Park. She's coming back stateside for a mini North America run. Check dates below video...who knows, you may catch me at one of 'em.

"The video, directed by Andrew Litten and shot in reverse over 22 hours, is a fitting stylistic nod to the Pharcyde's classic "Drop" video helmed by Spike Jonze. "I hired a linguist from UCLA to teach Mahalia the song backwards which she surprisingly learned in two days," Litten told Complex. "The DP, Dustin Lane, and I have always wanted to make something in our neighborhood Highland Park. We chose family-owned locations and hired a few extras while scouting the neighborhood. Mahalia's reversed performance oozes spontaneity and confidence. I can't thank her enough for joining us on the journey, and signing on to recreate this insane concept." - Complex Mag

Eric Bellinger "Meditation Music" EP (Nat'l Meditation Day)

It's National Meditation Day and Eric Bellinger drops his new 5-song EP called "Meditation Music" he created to soothe souls and raise vibrations. Now he’s making music inspired by yoga, nature sounds, and of course, meditation. And he has a good reason for bringing this music to the masses today.

May 31st is National Meditation Day and I really wanted to bring awareness to the lifestyle as a whole. I truly believe that yoga and meditation have changed my life for the better. It was a secret I felt I needed to share. Music is my platform...I always wanna do everything in my power to make the world a better place by way of my gift. I listen to smooth meditation sounds, nature sounds, flutes and waves everyday. They allow me to tap into a different realm, mentally. Breaking through the surface to new levels of clarity and creativity. I often find myself coming up with melodies and harmonizing to the different sounds. - Eric Bellinger.

Essince Throwback: Ryan Leslie - "How It Was Supposed To Be"

I've been a fan of Ryan Leslie for a while. He's so multi-talented (singing, rhyming, producing and playing multiple instruments) as well as his business acumen. I don't know how I missed this video but it's dope! And what a way to OPEN! I could listen to the a cappella quartet for hours.

But great video concept and song. Leslie is dope. Enjoy this edition of Essince Throwback. Check it out.

Hip-Hop In: Africa (Rythmz)

When I was in France last year I was really put on to not only the African scene but the power of AfroPop (touted by industry experts as the new wave). And I loved it. One of my Uber drivers in Paris was an AfroPop artist and I loved it.

2 man team, Rythmz (Dianee aka Phill Bill Beatz and Kezzy aka Kmaster Kmix) signed to Cameroonese label Empire Company to release their debut EP.

"Dianee & Kezzy are talented singers and musicians and pitch their voices on afrochill productions which make us want to enjoy the sun on the beach. Therefore, the artists want to spread "Afro-Bikosa" genre, a mix of Makossa, Afro-pop, Benskin and Bikutsi."

Sounds dope to me. Check out their new video "Fedeti" below. Click Here to listen to their Debut and Click Here to see past editions of Hip-Hop In

Always been a West Coast fan so definitely a fan of Too Short and E-40 collaborations. Add them to a Philthy Rich remix with Ziggy on the hook and viola:

The Bay’s favorite luxury rapper Philthy Rich dropped smash single “Right Now” last summer, but yesterday the Traxamillion-produced track took on a new life as legends E-40 and Too Short joined Philthy and singer Ziggy in a hot remix video. The visuals for “Right Now Remix” dropped on WorldStar Hip Hop and sparked huge anticipation for Philthy’s The Remixes II album release this weekend!

Sol - "If You Don't Call" [MV] *Posted from Brazil!

It's been a WILD few months (or 6) but right now I'm chilling in my hotel in Brazil after speaking on a panel at a big music show/event and had my artist, Layla Khepri booked as the featured performer and face of the festival. I've finally been able to relax a bit after and share with you guys.

I was caught in the youtube vortex and stubmled upon "if you don't call" by Sol and it spoke to me. I think that's the vibe I'm on. I meet so many people in my travels but I'm always accessible and keep in touch with people (and the internet doesn't allow for excuses much). Just know that I'm out hear living and enjoying life. I'd love to hear [back] from you [not chasin'] but if you're checking [and judging by views on my IG stories you are] just know that I'm okay "if you don't call". [wink emoji].

[Review] SK - Polo

I always like hearing someone's backstory. Not just that but hearing about multi-talented people. So when hearing Bronx-based NJ native, ‘SK’ is a singer, writer, rapper, guitarist, engineer and producer I was intrigued.
(Essince fun fact: SK played acoustic open mics 4 to 5 nights a week in Boston and was the lead guitarist in an old school funk/R&B band. I'd love to hear that!)

She went to MIT, studied math, and was an All-American athlete but switched focus to music after a few surgeries. Which is rough but glad she found another outlet for her energy. But sports appreciation is a lifelong trait (as some of you know I now own a professional basketball team. We sponsored an AAU tournament today and seeing all the kids playing reminded me of my AAU days.

But back to SK, Her new single “Polo” is a great example of her balanced influences. First listen I wasn't sure what I thought but after giving it a few more listens and particularly to her delivery and rhyme scheme it really grew on me. Making a commercially appealing song isn't easy. Oftentimes it comes off Forced. But I like "Polo". SK has a nice voice and her delivery is on point as is wordplay. Give it a listen/view below and let me know what you think!

Gavlyn x Reverie x Vel The Wonder - "Looking Back" MV

The future is female and it's Latina. Honored to know/work with these ladies (including director/editor, Enkrypt). I've been working with Reverie for a few years and seen her growth first hand. But through her I got hip to Gavlyn and Vel the Wonder (who's performing at our upcoming TAP Music Festival and conference in San Diego April 14th) and been watching them since like 2012 ish??

Anyway, these ladies work hard and are building empires and also laying foundations and making blueprints for independent success. If you aren't paying attention to how LA's getting down then you're missing out.

Hip-Hop In: Germany (the Tinder edition)

Good old Online-Dating. I was talked into starting a profile on Bumble recently. Never did the tindering or matching or plenty of fishing, but I'm giving Bumble a whirl (the women have to make the first move which is kinda dope). BUT, back to the topic at hand. Hip-hop and more importantly international hip-hop from the good people of Deutschland. Check it out:

Alidaxo started as a hip-hop act in 2015, since then Mischa, Erdi and Seppo have been transforming themselves under the direction of producer Dennis Brzoska (Susanne Blech, Urbanatix). They combine their songs with pop, indie rock and electrical sounds. The trio often incorporates German wordplays to illustrate daily life and captures irony to criticise society. Their newest single “Tinder for one” uses plenty of wit, cliché, prejudice to describe the significant features of the phenomenon of online dating.

Hey. Sorry I've been absent lately. But, you've been on my mind. Sometimes a man needs space to be a man and find himself before he can truly give you what you need, you know? That doesn't mean all of it has been for me, it's really been for you. I get distracted with life sometimes but an empty pitcher can't fill any glasses, can it. But Essince has plenty to give you, baby.

I'll let my friend put it in words better than I can. Happy Valentine's day.
